Breakfast in Italy is really the first dessert of the day. Waking up is certainly a good enough excuse for cookies and cake. In America we convince ourselves that our sugar cereal is worthy breakfast material, but here they don’t even try to hide it. They are eating cookies for breakfast and they know it.

Cookies of all shapes, chocolate filled croissants dusted with powdered sugar, chocolate milk, hot chocolate, coffee, fresh breads lathered in prune and apricot jams, and always, always Nutella.

A staple of Italian breakfast is of course, Nutella.
Ahhh, Nutella.
The holy albeit unhealthy hazelnut spread that has successfully spread itself across the globe. I guess I’d assumed that this ubiquitous spread had simply come into existence ex nihilo. But the Italians were quick and pleased to claim its origins, apparently beginning with Ferrero around 1963 in Piedmont, Italy.
Colazione here is a sweet start to the day, but don’t worry, there’s sure to be more sugar later on. Just wait until the daily snack time when we break out our cookies again.
